Patients with Chronic Pain and their General Practitioners

Introduction

Patients with chronic pain visit their general practitioners 5 times more frequently than others. However, 69% of primary care organisations have no guidelines or recommendations for the management of non-cancer pain. 81% of general practitioners believe patients receive sub optimal-treatment. Ongoing development of practice based commissioning in the patient driven NHS Agenda is leading towards a more patient orientated model based in the community setting. The management of chronic pain involves treating the whole patient and it is now widely accepted that the most appropriate setting for this management is most often in primary care. With this in mind, NAPP Pharmaceuticals have developed the Pain Management Service and Development Programme.

The Pain Management Service and Development Programme

The Pain Management Service and Development Programme has been commissioned by NAPP Pharmaceuticals as a service to medicine and was developed in response to requests from Trusts and individuals for assistance in setting up and implementing integrated primary care pain management services. The simple to use web based programme has been designed to assist effective pain service commissioning, providing primary care commissioners with a range of valuable resources around the entire commissioning cycle.
