Pain scale designed by Catherine Blackburn, patient at London Pain Clinic

A patient of London Pain Clinic was keeping a diary of pain to asses how best to optimise medication and other treatment. She was given a Visuoanalogue scale to use to rate the intensity of her pain.

On returning to the clinic having completed the diary she had created her own pain scale the 'Blackburn Patient Pain Scale' which we thought more accurately reflected pain itself.

The scale is divided into 10 parts but has a descriptor attached to each level.

Blackburn Patient Pain Scale

  1. Soreness
  2. Discomfort
  3. Tenderness
  4. Pain
  5. Deep pain
  6. Searing pain
  7. Agonising pain
  8. Excruciating pain
  9. Overwhelming pain
  10. Suicidal pain
